What To Expect:
As a design engineer within our NPD team you’ll be working closely with other design engineers, product managers & production leaders to create and develop new products and ideas.
Our products are made from a wide variety of manufacturing processes and materials including sheet metal, plastic mouldings, aluminium castings and extrusions. You will initiate new product concepts and ideas from a blank sheet of paper and see them all the way through to final validation, testing and launch ensuing gateways and targets are met along the way. You’ll be a key part in the invention and development of our future products.
Key Responsibilities:
* Collaborate with commercial teams to initiate new product concepts and ideas to meet customer requirements and specifications – strive for innovation
* Produce effective design solutions using creative problem solving
* Act as a project lead when appropriate to ensure deadlines are met
* Responsible for the completion and checking of drawings and other supporting documentation
* Work closely with our purchasing teams and suppliers to obtain accurate part costings
* Support our in-house production teams after launch and iron out production issues
* Work with marketing to help develop promotional materials
What You Will Need:
- Degree or equivalent in a relative Design or Engineering discipline
- Ideally 5 or more years of commercial experience
- Sound understanding of basic mechanical/product design principles and the development process
- Have good working knowledge of CAD, creating 3D models and 2D manufacturing drawings
- Proficiency in 3D modelling, assemblies, rendering and PDM software. We use Inventor but if you are familiar with another package then it is generally straightforward to covert
- Broad knowledge of a range of manufacturing materials and processes, in particular plastic mouldings, aluminium castings and metal fabrication would be advantageous
- Knowledge of the lighting industry would be of particular interest but not essential
- A creative and considered approach to problem solving, following clear design processes with pragmatic approach to balance cost and value
- Knowledge of the circular economy and circular design principles would be advantageous
- Proven experience of presenting ideas and results to both technical and non-technical colleagues including senior management.
- Ability to plan, prioritise and co-ordinate with work of others

Job Summary
The purpose of the role is to have full accountability and responsibility for managing and delivery of project works on time and to budget. Be responsible for generating and delivering a variety of project work on our customer sites.
Main Responsibilities:
* Identify and generate project opportunities.
* Supporting the Business Development team in liaising with key stakeholders on their requirements and explain feasibility of their schemes to become a trusted advisor.
* Work with Business Development, designers and sub-contractors to define and document scope(s) of work(s).
* Develop and understand the full scope of works in line with the desired project business case and in turn outcome. This is to be within agreed budget requirements and required profit margins.
* Manage, run and draw up tenders on behalf of the customer as required with the Thorlux supply chain. Carry out full tender analysis of all sub-contractor returns.
* Be the key interface between all internal departments to ensure the smooth delivery of the installation.
* Work within the current CDM legislation and the respective duties to the role assigned.
* Identify, reduce and manage all statutory and commercial risks associated with the project they are leading.
* Ensure detailed look ahead surveys are carried out in preparation for mobilisation.
* Ensure Thorlux QHSE practices and processes are fully embedded in each project.
* Ensure full compliance with project management policies and procedures.
* Manage the day-to-day operational aspects of the project(s) “end to end”. Activities to include but not be limited to estimating, business development, surveying, sub-contractor management and site manager duties.
* Direct line management responsibility for a site based project supervisor.
* Ensure customer acceptance is adhered to, in writing and in line with the project plans.
* Mutually agree payment schedules and applications for payment to the benefit of the project and the business.
* Ensures project documents are complete, current and appropriately stored.
* Provide timely monthly reports to the Major Projects Manager in an agreed format.

Business Development:
* Support the BD team to Identify and develop a short/medium and long term pipeline of Project opportunities from the portfolio of customers within Thorlux. Leverage opportunities through visibility and presence on customer sites.
* Liaise with colleagues to determine and identify project opportunities. Use case studies to promote business and host key decision makers on show site tours.
Building Relationships:
* Build strong effective working relationships with our customers, site teams and internal departments.
* Build a pipeline of supply partners and carry out supplier management with the correct approvals in conjunction with the central procurement team.
Commercial Awareness:
* Full accountability for the P&L on each project.
* Ensure that all financial objectives are met.
* Analyse variances and initiate corrective actions.
* Value all sub-contractor accounts and make application for payments.
* Ensure the projects achieve their financial goals and satisfy the commercial terms of the contract.
* Ensure all projects are managed through company policies and procedures in relation to commercial activities.
The Project Process:
* Define and understand the scope of work to meet the customer’s specification.
* Competitively price installation elements of the works whilst returning expected profit margins.
* Review all pre construction information and implement a construction phase plan.
* Engage with sub-contractors under the correct commercial terms.
* Define the project plan and programme to deliver the works.
* Appraise all sub-contractor RAMS to make sure that they are suitable and sufficient.
* Be in attendance on site for the works inclusive of any out of hour’s requirements.
* Set up the QHSE processes and make sure they are monitored.
* Ensure all variations to the works are captured, costed and claimed for.
* Make sure all O&M manuals are complete and available prior to practical completion.
* Close out all final accounts with both the customer and all those in the supply chain inclusive of project debt management.
Decision Making/Budgetary Control
* The post holder has full responsibility and financial control of the projects within their control.
