MediCinema, Birmingham Children’s Hospital

Birmingham, United Kingdom

Birmingham Children’s Hospital is a specialist paediatric centre that provides care to over 100,000 children and young people each year. Patients come from across the UK for a wide range of specialist treatments.

Working in partnership with the charity MediCinema, Birmingham Children’s Hospital has recently converted an on-site lecture theatre into a screening room for young patients to enjoy the magic and escapism of a trip to the movies. The room has 84 purpose-made, cinema-style seats, plus access and space for wheelchairs and hospital beds, with any associated medical equipment. Birmingham Children’s Hospital’s MediCinema is expected to host up to 260 screenings per year while still hosting staff training during the daytime.

Thorlux was delighted to provide standard and emergency lighting for the MediCinema refit, using the SmartScan wireless management system. This includes new Firefly recessed emergency luminaires with both area and corridor lenses, carefully positioned to provide a safe exit route in the event of a power failure, working in tandem with Lexi illuminated exit signs. The cinema ceiling is dotted with 18-watt R3 edge-lit circular downlighters, which can be dimmed or switched off for screenings using a wall-mounted SmartScan scene controller plate.
